On the original wiki, you see a lot of talk about patterns, a popular way of writing and thinking among some programmers borrowed from Christopher Alexander's books on architecture. We can borrow the idea here as well.
One way to think of patterns is as a bunch of little pieces that make up a practice (e.g. Participatory Processes), or in the pattern lingo, a Pattern language.
For example in wiki there's a pattern to Welcome Visitors. To support community, we want everyone who writes to get some feedback, so that they know that there presence here was noticed.
